The Academy of Young Scholars was launched in 2006 to reach a broader student population than that served by our highly selective Scholar Support Program, and aspires to significantly increase the number of high school students who matriculate to and graduate from four year colleges. The program goes beyond just academic support and the delivery of information about college requirements and availability of financial aid – the Academy’s primary focus is on attitudinal change and life skill development.

Most importantly, the Academy provides a structure at each school in which Academy Scholars bond into a peer group that reinforces positive behaviors and strong academic performance.

Those Academy students who fall within both the stringent academic standards and family income limitations required by the Scholar Support Program may apply for the Scholar Support Program as juniors (approximately one-third of those who rose through the Academy program were accepted into the Scholar Support Program’s class of 2010).

The other Academy seniors receive college admission guidance through the Academy, with the primary goal of attending and graduating from public universities.
